The Seventh Annual Underground Railroad Conference

Two Centuries of Resistance, Escape, and the Underground Railroad in New York and Across the Continent

7th Annual Underground Railroad History Conference
February 22, 23, 24, 2008
Albany, New York
Organized by Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc.

Although the name “Underground Railroad” became current only in the 1830s, enslaved people and their allies developed networks and systems for escape in the colony and state of New York, and across North America, throughout the two centuries before the Civil War. The Seventh Annual Underground Railroad Conference will focus on these systems and networks of escape, and on how they actually functioned in various times and in various places. Who was involved and what were their experiences? What were the structure and mechanisms of these networks? What were their means of transportation and communication, their relationship to larger social contexts, their folklores and cultures?
Spencer Crew, currently CEO of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, previously Director of the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History, will address this topic at the Friday evening reception. Saturday, educators, researchers, students, historians, scholars, musicians, artists, and re-enactors will bring to life the inspiring stories that compose this formative period in American history. Kim and Reggie Harris and Nzinga’s Daughters will conclude Saturday evening with an enriching musical performance. Sunday will include a tour of Underground Railroad locations in Albany.
Learn about and celebrate this history as you partake of these enriching offerings. Preserve it as you bring it back to your students and colleagues. Documentation of attendance will be available for all teachers.
